22 Nov 2009Bacon is believed to be one of the tastiest foods in Western culture. There are plenty sites dedicated to this subject. There are even fan clubs. Surprisingly, there are actually Bacon shoes (they are not really made out of Bacon but are rather fashioned to look as if they have been – do a query if you do not believe me).
This, perhaps astonishing popularity, makes me intrigued. Who invented bacon? How to cook bacon? Can you microwave bacon? How to make bacon? Can we do this ourselves? Which are the best bacon recipes? Is Bacon Healthy? Why do people love it so much?
Fortunately, the internet is a wonderful place to look for resources for such information. A quick query shows that Bacon is merely cured meat that is prepared from certain parts of a pig. There are many types of bacon which come from different parts of the pig (its belly, its side, its loins, its shoulder and even its cheeks). In addition, there are numerous ways of preparing it: it can be fried, boiled, smoked, baked, grilled, used as a component in a salad and in numerous other methods. Indeed, bacon can most definitely be microwaved (i.e. using a microwave bacon cooker), and this is an action people can do on their own.
Because Bacon is made from pigs (although in some countries, non-pork based bacon-like foods are also referred to as bacon, which is in my honest opinion simply does not count), is actually not allowed for consumption for followers of Judaism and Islam. Judaism considers pigs as ‘dirty’ or ‘tainted’ creatures and as such, all meats made from them are prohibited.
I need to finish, my Broccoli Bacon Chicken and Chilled Cauliflower Salad is waiting for me. I suggest you leave now and buy some. You know you want to.
